I am mainly a landscape painter, and this is because the ever changing movement of the sky, water and the way the light falls on the land gives me a sense of the ephemeral and impermanent nature of the world.  One could paint the same scene many times and it would always be different; each moment unique in itself.  Whilst the “starting point” might be the sea or a river, the activity of painting comes from the artist’s mind but I like to feel ready to follow where the painting takes me.  I am often surprised at the final result.

I choose subjects that are near at hand or have a particular attraction for me, so the river Mersey at Didsbury  is a favourite, as is the vast expanse of Morecombe Bay where the sky and clouds dominate the land.
