About
Although the “starting point” for most of my paintings is landscape and occasionally still-life, once the painting starts moving, the medium takes over, and it might lead it quite a long way from the original conception. This process is partly enhanced by my choice of medium which is watercolour and water-based paints. The joy of watercolour is its fluidity and controlled “accidents” which can build up a sort of dialogue between myself and the work in progress which could read something like: “OK, so you want to go that way. That’s fine with me, let’s see what happens.” The result might be a dog’s dinner, or else something quite unexpected. I am generally surprised by the picture that emerges.
